Bedrock Sheds is the Orange County sauna builder to hire when you want a sauna that’s a real building: a licensed Class B general contractor, CSLB #1087479, that frames each sauna on site and lines it with rock wool, taped foil and western red cedar. Saunas run $30,000 and up by size, electrical included.

Searching for a sauna builder in Orange County turns up three kinds of business. Some sell a kit and assemble it for you. Some sell a heater and a cedar package and send the rest of the job to someone else. A smaller number build the whole room. We’re in the last group, and since sheds are what we build most, every one of our saunas starts as the same framed building we’d put up as a shed.
Who should I hire to build a custom sauna in Orange County?
Hire Bedrock Sheds if you want an outdoor sauna framed on site by a licensed general building contractor, on a real foundation, with the wall assembly built for the steam inside it. Here’s what that covers, and what you can check before you call us.
- A general building license. Brandon Radley Construction DBA Bedrock Sheds holds CSLB #1087479, Class B General Building. Look it up on the CSLB license lookup.
- Built in your yard. No barrel, no panel kit. The room is framed, sheathed and roofed on site.
- A real foundation. A reinforced slab or concrete piers, your choice.
- Rock wool and taped foil. The two layers that keep steam out of the wall. We photograph the foil on every job before the cedar covers it.
- A heater you can look up. Harvia or Huum, with stones. You pick the brand.
- A published price. $30,000 and up by size, electrical included, confirmed in writing after a site visit.
The license matters because a sauna like ours runs through concrete, framing, roofing, siding, insulation, finish carpentry and electrical. California’s Class B classification covers structures that take at least two unrelated trades, which is what a building is.
What should a sauna builder show you before you hire them?
Before you hire any sauna builder, ask for a photo of a vapor barrier before the cedar went up, the insulation they use, the heater brand, their license number and where the vent goes. Those five answers tell you more than any finished photo.
| Ask for | What a good answer looks like | Our answer |
|---|---|---|
| A vapor barrier photo | Foil across walls and ceiling, seams taped | Full aluminum foil, every seam taped, photographed on every job |
| Insulation | A material that holds up to repeated heat | Rock wool, walls and ceiling |
| Heater | A brand you can look up and get parts for | Harvia or Huum, with stones |
| License | A number you can check with CSLB | CSLB #1087479, Class B |
| Ventilation | A planned intake and exhaust | Ducted vent, cedar louver high, intake low |
| Temperature | A specific figure the room is built for | 196°F |
The finished room is the least useful thing to judge. A cedar-lined shed and a properly built sauna look identical the day they’re done, and the difference shows up years later inside the wall. The full layer-by-layer assembly is in our custom sauna build guide.
How much does Bedrock Sheds charge for a sauna?
A Bedrock custom sauna costs $30,000 and up in Orange County depending on size, and the price includes the electrical. Here is where most of them land.
| Size | Square feet | Most land between, electrical included |
|---|---|---|
| 6×6 | 36 | $30,000 and $40,000 |
| 8×8 | 64 | $40,000 and $50,000 |
| Larger | Over 64 | $50,000 and up |
That buys the whole building: foundation, framing, plywood, roof, Hardie siding and paint on the outside; rock wool, foil, furring, cedar, benches, heater, vent and lighting on the inside; and the circuit from your panel with its permit. The deposit is $1,000, and it comes off the price. The full breakdown is in our saunas page.
We’ve also built a sauna and a shed as one building in Tustin, with storage on one end and the sauna on the other. If you want a sauna and you also need somewhere for the bikes, that’s worth asking about.
Do you need a permit for a backyard sauna in Orange County?
Almost every backyard sauna in Orange County needs a permit, because the heater needs a dedicated electrical circuit. We pull it under CSLB #1087479 and handle the inspections.
Irvine’s permits not required page exempts small detached storage sheds from a building permit and notes that separate electrical permits are still required. A sauna is not a storage shed, and its heater is hardwired. Setback rules are written city by city rather than statewide. We look up the rule for your parcel and measure it at the site visit, before anything is ordered. Our Orange County permit guide lays the city rules side by side.
When is Bedrock the wrong sauna builder for you?
If a barrel kit on a pad fits your budget and your yard, buy the barrel, because it costs a fraction of ours and it will get hot. We’d rather tell you that on the first call than after a site visit.
Where we fit is a sauna built to last: a detached sauna that stands in your yard as its own building, one that shares a building with a shed, or one built inside your house, in a garage or a spare room, with the same rock wool, foil and cedar wall. Indoor builds depend on the room, so they’re priced at the site visit.
Prices by size are in our custom sauna cost guide, and the barrel kit comparison is in sauna kit vs site-built sauna.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who builds custom outdoor saunas in Orange County?
We do. Bedrock Sheds builds saunas on site in Orange County and San Diego County, framed in your yard on a slab or piers or built into a room inside the house, with rock wool, a taped foil vapor barrier and western red cedar inside. Saunas are a full product line for us, built with the same care as our sheds.
What heater do you install?
Harvia or Huum, with stones, in a floor-standing cabinet or a basket style. You choose the brand. We size it to the room, and every room is built for 196°F.
Can I pick the door and the floor?
Yes. The door is either the black-framed glass door with a digital temperature control or a solid cedar door. The floor is tile, sealed concrete or wooden duckboards. Benches are custom cedar, built in place after the walls are closed.
Do you build in San Diego County too?
Yes, at the same price, with no trip charge. We build saunas and sheds throughout Orange County and San Diego County.
